Brewing Guide

Preface:

I am no expert and this guide is just to help out beginners and provide a good starting point for experimentation. If the coffee you like is in your cup then the way you are brewing it is perfect. I tend to use boiling (or nearly boiling) water for my coffee brewing which can change the results so play around with it. It is generally accepted that lighter roasted coffee can handle hotter water than darker roasted coffee, so keep that in mind depending on your roast preferances.

V60:

Boil water and rinse the filter. Grind coffee Medium/Fine and use 6g of coffee for every 100g of water. Adjust ratio to taste. Place the ground coffee into the brewer and make a small pit in the center. Pour in enough water to cover all the coffee and let it bloom for 45s. This is caused by CO2 gas escaping and will be more prominent in fresh coffee. Pour in the remaining water slowly in a counter-clockwise spiral being careful not to overfill. When all the water is poured, carefully swirl the V60 to knock the grounds off the sides and level the bed. Once all the water has flowed through, pour into a mug and enjoy.

I use a ratio of 30g coffee to 500g water and have found it to work for me. It gives me approximately 16oz or two decent cups of coffee. Feel free to experiment and let me know how you do it.

French Press:

Boil water and disassemble the press. Grind coffee Medium/Coarse. Use a ratio of 30g coffee to 500g water or scale appropriately. Place ground coffee into the french press and pour all the boiling water on top. Let it sit for 4 minutes. Stir the crust that forms at the surface so it falls down to the bottom. Wait at least another 5 minutes. The longer you wait, the fewer particles will be in the final cup. Press the plunger down nearly to the bed of grounds. Pour into a mug and enjoy.

Aeropress:

Boil water and disassemble Aeropress then place the bottom onto a mug. Grind 11g coffee to Medium/Fine and place inside. pour 200g water over the coffee and place the plunger 1cm in to stop the flow. Wait 2 minutes. Carefully swirl the whole setup to settle the grounds floating on top. Wait 30 more seconds. Press the plunger slowly and enjoy.

Drip Coffee Maker:

Grind coffee Medium and place it into the filter basket. Fill up the tank with the appropriate amount of water for your desired amount of coffee. Start the coffee maker and wait. When it is done pour into a mug and enjoy. I would use a 30g coffee to 500ml of water ratio. If you are using a scoop to measure coffee it is probably 2tbsp or 10g so use one scoop per cup measurement on your coffee maker. Check your scoop to verify it is 2 tbsp. (For example: If your coffee maker says 8 cups, use 8 scoops or 80g coffee. A cup is 6oz in the coffee world.)

Helpful Conversions:

1tbsp = 5g

1ml(water) = 1g

1oz(fluid) = 30ml

1oz(mass) = 28g

1 16oz bag of coffee will make around 45 6oz cups of coffee.
